Description
Virtue: Pax (Peace)
Enduring Principle: “Seek Peace.”
The South Dakota 1 Goldback introduces Pax, the embodiment of Peace, through a vivid homage to Lakota culture and philosophy. Inspired by a live performance by a Lakota artist, Pax is depicted as a Lakota woman in traditional regalia performing the hoop dance, a ceremony celebrating harmony with all creation—humans, animals, plants, and the elements themselves.
Behind her rises Bear Butte (Mato Paha), a sacred landmark in Lakota tradition, while a circle of animals surrounds her, symbolizing coexistence and the interconnectedness of life. The design incorporates a cancega drum adorned with the Sacred Hoop or Medicine Wheel, representing the seven sacred elements: earth, air, water, stone, animals, plants, and fire. Each element reinforces the holistic vision of peace and balance central to Lakota teachings.
In the lower corner, the delicate Prairie Crocus (Pasque flower) blooms, embodying the fleeting beauty of life and the importance of choosing peace in the brief span we are given. A banner reading “Alliance of Friends” acknowledges the Lakota meaning of “Lakota” (along with “Dakota” and “Nakota”) as “The Friendly Ones,” honoring community, respect, and unity.
Pax’s graceful motion, the sacred setting, and the rich symbolism combine to convey the enduring virtue of Peace. At her feet, the inscription “Seek Peace” invites viewers to embrace harmony in thought, word, and action—reflecting a philosophy passed down through generations and immortalized in this Goldback.
