The New Hampshire 10 Goldback presents Prospicientia, the embodiment of foresight, poised confidently atop a cannon overlooking the Atlantic coastline. Behind her rises Fort Constitution (formerly Fort William and Mary), anchoring the scene in a pivotal prelude to the American Revolution.
This moment recalls the quick action taken by New Hampshire Patriots after an early warning ride by Paul Revere. Learning that General Thomas Gage intended to seize the fort’s weapons cache, local revolutionaries displayed remarkable foresight. They rallied hundreds of men from Portsmouth and nearby towns, arriving in time to overwhelm the small British garrison of six soldiers. Amid live cannon and musket fire, the Patriots captured 16 cannons, roughly 100 barrels of gunpowder, firearms, and ammunition, and lowered the British flag—an act considered one of the first bold moves of the Revolutionary War.
