About the Design

Veritas, or Truth, is the main character on the 5 Utah Goldback Design. She is a pioneer from Utah, honoring all the brave people that travelled to Salt Lake Valley in 1847! Her hair is blowing in the wind and she’s holding up a lantern with her right hand. The light from the lantern stands for truth – it can help us when we don’t know what to do during our life journey. Veritas is here to show us the way!

This Utah goldback gold note design represents an important part of Utah tradition and history. Veritas is a reminder that no matter how dark things get, there’s always hope if we stay true to ourselves.

The woman in the picture is walking along with a phrase, “Walk In Truth”. Her apron pocket contains a compass to symbolize sticking to truth as our moral compass. The compass points West, reminding us of the Utah settlers who traveled to settle in the West. She holds two books in her left hand which stand for written truth – one called “Judah” (which stands for the Bible) and another named “Joseph” (for the Book of Mormon). Both these books helped provide guidance to those on their journey.

Veritas stands close to a pool with a waterfall, like we need truth just as much as fresh water. A deer, symbolizing the messenger of truth, is seen at the bottom of a huge cottonwood tree drinking from the pool. Furthermore, a fish in the stream emerging from the pool reminds us of the Roman symbol for truth. Finally, an eagle hovers in the sky above watching over all that is true and reminding us of promised freedom in the United States.

The North Star twinkles brightly in the sky, showing us that truth can never be hidden. Veritas is shown without shoes, telling us that it’s not always easy to follow the truth – but when we do, we reach our goal and it feels so good!
