Description
Utah 2 Goldback – Gratia (Grace)
The Utah 2 Goldback features Gratia, the virtue of Grace, in a design inspired by the historic Miracle of the Gulls and the resilience of Utah’s early pioneer communities.
Gratia is portrayed as a pioneer woman expressing gratitude during the events of 1848, when swarms of crickets threatened crops in the Salt Lake Valley. As the insects devastated fields and endangered the settlers’ food supply, flocks of gulls arrived and consumed large numbers of the crickets, helping protect what remained of the harvest.
The scene captures the relief and thankfulness associated with this remarkable event. Gratia looks upward as light breaks through the sky, while California gulls gather around her and feed on the crickets below.
In the background, a simple sod-roof cabin reflects the difficult living conditions faced by many early settlers. Nearby, rows of planted crops symbolize the hard work, sacrifice, and determination required to establish a new community in the region.
The design centers on the idea of grace appearing in unexpected moments, especially during hardship. It reflects gratitude, humility, and the ability to recognize blessings even when circumstances seem uncertain.
Along the bottom of the artwork appears the enduring principle:
“The Lord will provide.” — Genesis 22:14
For collectors of Utah Goldbacks, the 2 Goldback Gratia combines pioneer history, religious symbolism, the Miracle of the Gulls, and detailed storytelling in a design focused on gratitude and grace.
