Justitia, the embodiment of Justice, makes her second appearance in the Goldback series on Nevada’s 10 Goldback note. Inspired by the statue of Justice atop the historic Storey County Courthouse in Virginia City, this depiction shows her veil drawn back, symbolizing transparency and the belief that justice should be seen and known by all. Her open eyes reflect vigilance and moral clarity: nothing escapes her notice.
Nevada’s rich history and landscape are woven into the design. Wild mustangs run across the scene, with Pyramid Lake nestled beneath the surrounding mountains. Etched into the column beneath Justitia is the word “Battleborn,” honoring Nevada’s admission as a state during the Civil War. At her side, a badger signifies determination, while native mesquite trees root the composition in the Silver State.
The foreground incorporates elements of Nevada’s frontier legacy: a six-shooter revolver, a .30-30 rifle, and a wine barrel labeled “Cup Bearer Wine, Cana Dry Red,” symbolizing local culture and history. In the sky, Sandhill Cranes soar, representing migration, grace, and the harmony between law and nature. Together, these elements underscore the principle that true justice is righteous, vigilant, and grounded in the community it serves.
