Virtue: Libertas (Liberty)
Enduring Principle: “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” — Attributed to Thomas Jefferson
The Oklahoma 100 Goldback is a solemn and powerful tribute to the 45th Infantry Division, also known as the Thunderbird Division—one of the most decorated and heroic military units in U.S. history. Formed in 1923 from the Oklahoma National Guard, the division drew strength from the diverse and resilient people of the state, including a remarkable number of Native American soldiers from the Five Civilized Tribes: the Choctaw, Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), Seminole, and Chickasaw Nations.
During World War II, the 45th played a pivotal role in the European theater—landing in Sicily in 1943, pushing through Italy, enduring the brutal siege of Anzio, advancing through Southern France, and ultimately entering Germany. But perhaps its most defining and heartbreaking moment came on April 29, 1945, when the 45th helped liberate Dachau Concentration Camp, uncovering the horrors of the Holocaust. Eyewitnesses, including Lt. Col. Felix Sparks, described hardened veterans weeping or overwhelmed with grief. PFC John Lee remembered the indescribable joy of survivors as they realized they were finally free.
At the center of this Goldback stands Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty—rendered not ahead of the troops, but among them, symbolizing shared purpose. She wears a gown of stars and stripes, inspired by the Liberty figure on the Oklahoma State Seal and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, a coin carried by many soldiers during the war. Her shield bears the Great Seal of Oklahoma, including the seals of the Five Civilized Tribes—a powerful symbol of unity between the state and its sovereign Native nations.
On her belt appear symbols from the Oklahoma state flag: the Osage warrior shield, peace pipe, and olive branch—signifying a balance of strength and diplomacy. Near her ankle lies a broken shackle, a quiet yet potent reminder of those freed at Dachau. Around her neck, a Star of David necklace glints—a sacred tribute to the Jewish lives saved by the 45th.
Behind Libertas, the scene unfolds:
-
Sherman tanks and Willys MB Jeeps roll across the battlefield
-
Fighter planes streak overhead
-
A bald eagle, sacred in Native tradition, soars across storm-lit skies
-
A bolt of lightning evokes the Thunderbird, a powerful figure in Southeastern tribal mythology—seen as a protector, storm-bringer, and agent of divine justice
In the foreground, soldiers push forward under skies charged with energy. Their helmets bear the Thunderbird insignia, and one soldier’s pack displays a flowing banner inscribed with a single word: “Libertas.” It is the cause they fought for, the legacy they carried, and the freedom they preserved.
Etched at the bottom of the note is the enduring quote:
“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”
This Goldback honors not only the 45th Division and their extraordinary sacrifices, but also the Native nations who sent their sons to defend liberty, and the people of Oklahoma whose legacy is one of service, courage, and unbreakable conviction.
