Utah 50 Goldback – Libertas (Liberty)

The Utah 50 Goldback features Libertas, the virtue of Liberty, in a design inspired by one of the most important transportation milestones in American history: the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad at Promontory Summit, Utah.

Libertas stands at the center of the scene during the historic Golden Spike Ceremony of May 10, 1869, symbolizing the freedom, opportunity, and national connection made possible by the joining of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads.

She is shown driving the final blow to the legendary golden spike, marking the completion of the rail line that connected the eastern and western United States. The event dramatically changed travel, trade, communication, and commerce, while establishing Utah as the setting for a defining moment in the country’s expansion.

Several details throughout the artwork reinforce both Utah identity and the theme of liberty. Libertas wears a belt featuring the Utah state seal, while under UV light a band in the colors of the state flag appears around her arm. A California gull flies overhead, adding another regional symbol to the scene.
