Utah 5 Goldback – Devotionis (Devotion)

The Utah 5 Goldback features Devotionis, the virtue of Devotion, in a design inspired by the faith, labor, and community spirit of Utah’s early pioneers.

Devotionis is portrayed as a pioneer woman standing with quiet purpose, holding a Bible in one hand and a basket filled with crops in the other. Together, these elements represent the combination of faith and hard work that shaped daily life for many settlers in the Salt Lake Valley.

Behind her, cultivated fields reflect the agricultural effort required to build and sustain early communities in the region. A basket of early harvest produce reinforces the connection between perseverance, stewardship, and the rewards of steady labor.

Another distinctive detail appears in the tree trunk behind her, where the word “Deseret” is carved using the Deseret alphabet. Developed in Utah during the 19th century, this writing system was created as part of an effort to reform English spelling and literacy. Under UV light, the inscription’s English translation becomes visible, adding a hidden historical element to the artwork.

A beehive hanging from the branches of a cottonwood tree provides another strong Utah symbol. Long associated with industry, cooperation, and perseverance, the beehive has become one of the state’s most recognizable emblems.
