About the Design

The Utah series concludes with the Lady Virtue Libertas, or Liberty. She is an angelic figure who has achieved a perfect state through the proper usage of liberty in life. Her right hand holds a torch that signifies enlightenment and her left hand carries an overflowing cup symbolizing the blood of Christ and its link to freedom. Lastly, Liberty is besides a sheathed sword and shield.

This shield is a reminder of the hard work and effort put in to defend freedom. In 1847, the year when people first moved to Utah they finally felt free. At first they called Utah, “Deseret” – which means honey bee. Just like on the Utah flag, there’s an image of a honey bee nest on the shield – this symbolizes how we have to work together to protect our liberty. Let us never forget what it took for us to be free!

Libertas showcases a powerful combination of the mountain lion and lamb, symbolizing harmony through liberty which is described in Isaiah 11:6. Sitting in the Rocky Mountains, the art also features Utah’s state tree – the blue spruce, its state flower – the sego lily, as well as Bear Lake, nicknamed “The Caribbean of the Rockies”. All these elements come together to depict freedom and peace!
