Utah 1/4 Goldback – Justitia (Justice)

The Utah 1/4 Goldback features Justitia, the virtue of Justice, in a redesigned scene inspired by Utah’s dramatic landscape and the principles of fairness, truth, and impartial judgment.

Justitia holds a set of scales in one hand, symbolizing balance and equal treatment, while a sword in the other represents the defense of truth and the authority required to uphold justice. A blindfold covers her eyes, reinforcing the idea that justice should be administered without favoritism or prejudice.

Inscribed on her belt is the word “Deseret,” meaning honeybee and referencing the historic name once proposed for the region that became Utah. The detail ties the design to Utah’s pioneer heritage and the longstanding Beehive State symbolism associated with industry, cooperation, and perseverance.

The setting draws from the striking red-rock scenery near Moab, Utah, with Balanced Rock in Arches National Park appearing prominently in the background. Its naturally poised form complements the theme of balance at the center of the design.

Above the scene, a bald eagle flies overhead as a symbol of strength, freedom, and authority. Under UV light, an additional hidden detail appears: a rabbit carried in the eagle’s talons, adding another layer of meaning and visual interest to the artwork.
