Idaho 100 Goldback Design Meaning: Liberty and the Transformation of the Magic Valley

Virtue: Libertas (Liberty)
Enduring Principle: “A blessing upon all that thou settest thine hand unto.” — Deuteronomy 28:8

The Idaho 100 Goldback features the virtue Libertas, representing liberty, opportunity, and the rewards of hard work. As with every 100 Goldback design, Liberty serves as the capstone virtue of the series, symbolizing the freedom that comes from responsibility, ingenuity, and productive labor.

The scene is set at Shoshone Falls in Idaho’s Magic Valley, often called the “Niagara of the West.” Towering over the Snake River, the falls stand as one of Idaho’s most dramatic natural landmarks. In the artwork, Libertas strides forward carrying a shovel, representing the work ethic, determination, and innovation that shaped southern Idaho.

Behind her, the powerful waters of Shoshone Falls cascade into the Snake River, referencing the irrigation systems that transformed the region’s once-arid landscape into fertile farmland. This transformation was made possible in part by the Carey Act of 1894, which encouraged the development of privately funded irrigation projects on public lands.

Major infrastructure projects such as Milner Dam and the Twin Falls Canal helped channel the Snake River’s water across the valley, allowing agriculture to flourish. These irrigation systems reshaped the Magic Valley into one of the most productive agricultural regions in the western United States.

The surrounding imagery reinforces this story of opportunity created through effort and innovation. A crop duster flies overhead, while cultivated farmland stretches across the valley below—symbolizing Idaho’s ongoing leadership in agriculture.

At Libertas’s feet sits a cornucopia overflowing with Idaho’s agricultural abundance, including potatoes, sugar beets, wheat, and onions. Throughout the scene appear potato blossoms and syringa, Idaho’s official state flower, further tying the design to the state’s identity.

Above the landscape, a soaring eagle represents independence, vision, and the enduring promise of liberty.

Together, these elements portray liberty through the lens of Idaho’s history—freedom earned through hard work, innovation, and a deep connection to the land.

Inscribed within the design is the guiding scripture:

“A blessing upon all that thou settest thine hand unto.” — Deuteronomy 28:8

The Idaho 100 Goldback stands as a tribute to the spirit of enterprise and the belief that dedication and stewardship can transform both land and opportunity.
