Virtue: Honestas (Honor)
Enduring Principle: “Whatever you do, do it heartily.” — Colossians 3:23
The Oklahoma ½ Goldback honors the enduring virtue of Honestas—Honor, through a bold and striking depiction of a young cowgirl leading her cattle across the historic Chisholm Trail. Once stretching over a thousand miles from Texas to Kansas, this legendary trail served as a lifeline of commerce in the late 1800s, guiding millions of longhorns toward expanding railways and markets.
This particular scene is set near Red River Station, the gateway into Indian Territory, capturing a charged and purposeful moment in time. A confident cowgirl rides at the head of the herd, her lasso slicing through the air as she drives the cattle forward with precision and resolve. The herd bears a “1867” brand, marking the official year the trail was established. Nearby, a Chisholm Trail marker stands partially buried in the dust—silent testimony to the generations who carved their journeys into legend.
The cowgirl isn’t just part of the landscape—she represents the spirit of honor itself. Her composed strength, focused expression, and unshakable presence reflect the values of those who blazed this trail before her. These were people who worked hard, lived with integrity, and upheld their responsibilities whether watched or unseen.
The journey across Oklahoma’s portion of the Chisholm Trail was among the toughest. Cowboys faced treacherous rivers, stampedes, quicksand, and relentless weather, all while moving thousands of cattle across the open plains. Outposts and camps along the trail eventually grew into towns like Duncan, Kingfisher, and Oklahoma City, each shaped by this rugged legacy.
Throughout the design, subtle details evoke the spirit of trail life: a worn wagon wheel and trail marker lie half-buried in dust. Overhead, a hawk soars, symbolizing watchfulness, freedom, and the powerful connection between sky and land. At the bottom of the bill, the cowgirl’s sash bears the word “Honestas”, and the scripture from Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, do it heartily.”
This Goldback is more than historical—it’s a tribute to a code of living. To those who led with conviction. To the spirit of honor that still runs deep in Oklahoma hearts today.
