Description
Virtue: Libertas (Liberty)
Enduring Principle: “Stand Fast in Liberty.”
The South Dakota 50 Goldback honors Libertas—Liberty—through a commanding depiction of freedom, courage, and vigilance. As the culminating virtue of the U.S. Goldback series, she embodies the timeless ideals of liberty, justice, and civic responsibility, rooted both in classical symbolism and South Dakota’s rich heritage.
At the center, a striking figure of Libertas stands clad in Roman-style armor, wielding a raised sword and shield. Her shield bears her name, motifs from the South Dakota state flag, and the state motto: “Under God the People Rule.” Drawing inspiration from the Roman goddesses Minerva and Bellona, her crested helmet reflects both wisdom and protection, reinforcing her role as guardian of liberty.
At her feet rests the painted skull of an American bison, adorned with the Lakota Sioux Medicine Wheel, honoring the sacredness of life and the enduring cultural heritage of South Dakota’s Native tribes—Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota. Freesia flowers bloom nearby, symbolizing peace, friendship, and purity.
The surrounding landscape captures the state’s iconic scenery: a fisherman casts for walleye—South Dakota’s state fish—against the rugged cliffs of Palisades State Park, while behind Libertas, the State Capitol rises and the Needles formations of the Black Hills stretch into the distance. Mount Rushmore crowns the horizon, reinforcing the enduring themes of liberty, democracy, and national pride.
Every detail of this composition conveys a singular message: to stand firm in defense of freedom, honor heritage, and embrace the responsibilities of liberty. Libertas serves as both a symbol and a call to action, reminding South Dakotans—and all Americans—of the vigilance required to preserve and celebrate the freedoms they hold dear.
