Virtue: Perseverantia (Perseverance)
Enduring Principle: “I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7

The Oklahoma 1 Goldback celebrates the virtue of Perseverance by paying tribute to one of the most defining moments in the state’s history—the Land Run of 1889. On April 22nd, over 50,000 hopeful settlers surged into the Unassigned Lands, each racing to claim 160 acres of opportunity. From this flurry of ambition, towns like Oklahoma City and Guthrie rose in a single day, marking a pivotal shift in the region’s destiny.

The design draws visual and emotional inspiration from the Centennial Land Run Monument in Oklahoma City. At the center, a young pioneer woman on horseback charges forward, hair and dress windblown in motion, her horse mid-stride in the great race for land and legacy. In her hand, she holds a land stake embroidered with the word “Perseverantia”, symbolizing her determination to forge a new beginning. Etched on her saddle is the proud phrase “The Sooner State”, reflecting the state’s identity and its nuanced history—where ambition sometimes outpaced the rules.

Surrounding her are galloping settlers, wagons, and rich symbolic elements from Oklahoma’s natural landscape. The Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Oklahoma’s state bird, soars above, while Purple Coneflowers and Blue Wild Indigos bloom below—native plants that embody the resilience of both the land and the people who shaped it.

The narrative acknowledges not only the settler’s pursuit but also the deeper truth behind the land’s history. This territory once belonged to Native nations—its reassignment forever changing their lives. That layered history is recognized, not forgotten.

Ultimately, Perseverantia represents more than just perseverance in name. It embodies the quiet strength and determination of those who, in the face of hardship, chose to press forward. It’s a tribute to every Oklahoman who didn’t just survive—but endured and built something lasting. The verse from 2 Timothy 4:7 inscribed at the bottom reminds us of that spirit: “I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
