Idaho 3 Goldback (Limited Early Release) Design Meaning: Joy and Idaho’s Skiing Heritage

Virtue: Laetitia (Joy)
Enduring Principle: “Being present brings joy.” — Psalm 30:5

The Limited Early Release (LER) Idaho 3 Goldback represents the virtue Laetitia, symbolizing joy, celebration, and the freedom found in living fully in the present moment. The design is set in the snowy Smoky Mountains of Idaho, a region known for its dramatic winter landscapes and deep connection to outdoor recreation.

At the center of the artwork, a skier confidently descends a powder-covered slope, capturing the exhilaration and freedom that comes from embracing the moment. Her sweater is embroidered with “The Gem State,” Idaho’s nickname, referencing the state’s rich mineral heritage and rugged mountain terrain.

In the background, a chairlift rises along the mountainside, paying tribute to one of Idaho’s most influential contributions to winter sports—the world’s first ski chairlift.

In 1936, engineer James Curran, working for the Union Pacific Railroad, developed the modern chairlift. His idea was inspired by a banana-loading conveyor system used on cargo ships, which efficiently moved fruit from docks to vessels. Curran adapted the concept for skiing, allowing riders to travel uphill comfortably and making the sport accessible to far more people.

The invention was installed at America’s first destination ski resort in Sun Valley, Idaho, and soon became the standard for ski resorts around the world. The chairlift shown in the design symbolizes Idaho’s lasting influence on modern winter recreation.

Additional details throughout the scene reflect Idaho’s wilderness and spirit of innovation. In the foreground, a red fox moves swiftly across the snow, representing intelligence and adaptability in harsh winter conditions. In the distance, a bull elk stands among the trees, symbolizing the strength and resilience of Idaho’s wildlife.

A rustic mountain cabin appears in the background, reflecting the long tradition of skiing, mountain travel, and winter recreation that has become part of Idaho’s culture.

Hidden within the design is a subtle television etched onto a sign, an Easter egg honoring Idaho native Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of electronic television and one of the state’s most influential innovators.

Together, the imagery captures the spirit of Laetitia—the joy that comes from adventure, discovery, and being fully present in the moment.

Inscribed across the artwork is the guiding principle:

“Being present brings joy.” — Psalm 30:5
