Description
Virtue: Gratia (Grace)
Enduring Principle: “Give Thanks.”
Making her debut in the Goldback series, Gratia—the embodiment of grace—is depicted as an Abenaki woman of the Algonquin peoples, whose heritage is deeply rooted in New Hampshire. She wears traditional attire and beadwork and stands thoughtfully in front of a classic Abenaki wigwam, symbolizing connection to ancestry, culture, and the land. A river otter accompanies her, representing adaptability, joy, and the ability to live gracefully in the present moment.
The design weaves together spiritual and cultural symbolism from both Native traditions and Judeo-Christian heritage. A shofar rests nearby, evoking the Jewish celebration of Rosh Hashanah, while harvest elements—pumpkins, corn, beans, chestnuts, and a beehive—highlight abundance, sweetness, and the rewards of diligence. Gratia is pictured collecting chestnuts, reflecting the harmony of effort, gratitude, and thoughtful stewardship.
The note subtly honors New Hampshire’s role in establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday, acknowledging the efforts of Sarah Josepha Hale, a native who championed the tradition. In the background, ancient stone structures—including the mysterious formations known as America’s Stonehenge—tie the scene to the state’s deep and diverse cultural history.
Beneath her, the phrase “Give Thanks” invites viewers to embrace gratitude, recognize the labors of those who came before, and live with grace in every season.
