Making her first appearance in the Nevada series on the 5 Goldback, Sophia, the personification of Wisdom, is portrayed in the classical form of Athena, goddess of intellect, strategy, and foresight. She embodies divine insight and discernment, guiding all who seek knowledge and understanding.
The backdrop celebrates Nevada’s unique heritage and achievements: towering libraries and academic buildings from the University of Nevada and UNLV, antique mining equipment, books and scrolls, a Hoover Dam hard hat, a silver mine cart, quartz mills, and Locomotive No. 40. A scroll displays text from the 15th Amendment, commemorating Nevada’s role as the first state to ratify it, ensuring voting rights regardless of race.
Clad in traditional armor, Sophia wears a raised helmet, breastplate, and arm guards. She carries a shield, spear, and pickaxe, honoring both wisdom in defense and Nevada’s storied mining history. Around her neck rests the owl, her eternal companion and symbol of discernment.
Sophia stands atop an open book supported by a column engraved with Nevada’s state motto, “All for Our Country.” Nearby, the Mountain Bluebird—Nevada’s state bird—and the White Pine tree pay tribute to the state’s eastern regions and natural heritage, including White Pine County.
