Virtue: Temperantia (Temperance)

Enduring Principle: “The fruit of the Spirit is temperance.” — Galatians 5:22–23

The Arizona 1 Goldback honors the virtue of Temperantia—Temperance—through a vivid depiction of southern Arizona during the early 1800s, a period defined by balance, resilience, and the blending of cultures. This artwork draws inspiration from the Mexican era of Tubac, a formative chapter in the region’s history following Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821.

At the center, a poised young woman embodies temperance itself. She wears a finely embroidered 19th-century Mexican dress, reflecting the fusion of Indigenous, Spanish, and Mexican traditions that shaped southern Arizona. Her calm, focused posture conveys quiet strength, patience, and harmony—the essence of Temperantia.

Behind her rises Mission San José de Tumacácori, one of Arizona’s oldest and most treasured landmarks. Founded in 1691 by Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino, the mission became a cornerstone of faith, community, and culture. Under Mexican rule, Tumacácori remained a spiritual hub despite the challenges of limited resources and Apache raids. Nearby, the presidio of Tubac illustrates Mexico’s commitment to stability and the protection of frontier communities. Together, these elements anchor the scene in the enduring legacy of faith, governance, and cultural blending.

The surrounding desert landscape is alive with symbolic wildlife and plants. A saguaro blossom stands resilient; a cactus wren represents resourcefulness; and a two-tailed swallowtail butterfly drifts gracefully overhead. At her feet, a desert tortoise and javelina embody endurance, while cultivated corn, chiles, and prickly pear honor the land’s generosity and the Mexican families who shaped it. Above, a Harris’s hawk soars through dramatic skies, symbolizing focus, harmony, and the strength found in measured action.

Every detail of the Arizona 1 Goldback reflects the calm power of temperance: balancing the past and present, nature and human endeavor, faith and daily life. This note celebrates the quiet, enduring influence of those who shaped Arizona’s southern frontier and preserves the legacy of harmony and resilience that continues to define the region.
