Description
Virtue: Libertas (Liberty)
Enduring Principle: “Stand Fast in Liberty.”
Libertas returns as the crowning Virtue in the Nevada Goldback series, set beneath a starlit Sierra Nevada sky. She is portrayed in the likeness of Eve, the first woman and mother of humanity, symbolizing the divine gift of agency and the courageous choice that brought forth humankind. Artistic inspiration also draws from the iconic Aphrodite statue at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, blending classical elegance with Nevada’s unique cultural flair.
In her raised left hand, Libertas holds a pomegranate, representing all of humanity, while her right hand grips a vertical staff, symbolizing royal authority and Nevada’s history of vertical mining, highlighting the state’s legacy in precious metals. She stands atop a stone pedestal etched with a seashell, a traditional symbol associated with Aphrodite, and a basket of pomegranates rests at her feet.
Nearby, a burning rock altar reflects the biblical tradition of offering gratitude for freedom, and a small pillar supporting a globe underscores Liberty’s role as a guiding light to the world. Nevada’s state animal, the Desert Bighorn Sheep, appears in both the foreground and background as emblems of resilience and freedom in rugged, elevated terrain. The Bristlecone Pine, one of the oldest living trees on Earth, reinforces the enduring and eternal nature of Liberty as a Virtue.
